Literature Review on the Modelled and Forecasted Innovation Trends up to 2050
2020
VPP Enerģētika projekts INGRIDO

The deliverable provides an overview of the foreseen innovations in energy, particularly focusing on the field of electrical energy/ power engineering, but also exploring topical issues in heating technologies. The report is based on both local and international researcher scientific publications, online resources, statistical databases, and white papers and energy sector scenario modelling results published by a number of authoritative international energy organizations. The report has three main chapters. The first chapter deals with innovations in electrical energy, in detail exploring topics related to renewable generation technologies, transmission and distribution grid development, energy storage technologies and expected changes on the demand side. The second chapter deals with the development of the heating sector, considering topics like innovations in heat energy production, district heating system (DHS) operational principles (e.g., 4th and 5th generation DHS), and heat energy storage solutions. Finally, the last chapter provides insights into the modelling results of various international organizations (such as Bloomberg NEO, IRENA, EC e-Highway 2050 project, ENTSO-E and ENTSO-G, WEC, IEA and the BENTE project), mostly focusing in particular to technologies outlined in the previous chapters. The modelling horizon considered is generally 2050 but select scenarios with alternative timespan are also taken into account.
