Hydrogen Strategy: a Major Step towards a German Hydrogen Economy
2022
Leo Jansons

In June 2020, Germany presented its National Hydrogen Strategy (NMS), becoming the first country in the world to develop and adopt such a comprehensive and comprehensive document dedicated to the production, logistics and end-use of green hydrogen. It is important to note that the VINU was published even before the approval of the European Union (EU) Hydrogen Strategy. Only a month later, the German Federal Network Agency (Bundesnetzagentur; FTA) issued a paper on the regulation of hydrogen networks and conducted a survey asking market participants whether they felt the need to regulate hydrogen networks and, if so, what that regulation should look like. . The results of this survey were presented in November 2020, confirming that the regulation of hydrogen networks must be developed and approved before large-scale national or international green hydrogen management infrastructure projects can be implemented. Finally, on 1 January 2021, a new Renewable Energy Sources Act (EEG2021) entered into force in Germany, which for the first time contains specific provisions aimed at supporting the production and industrial use of green hydrogen. Germany is thus demonstrating a strong commitment to play a leading role in green hydrogen, not only in Europe but also in the world, and has embarked on a process to address the remaining regulatory issues and create a truly functioning green hydrogen market over the next decade.
