On the Stability of the Flow in a Vertical Fluid Layer with Permeable Boundaries Caused by a Nonlinear Heat Source

Stability of a steady convective flow caused by a nonlinear heat source (the result of a chemical reaction) is analysed in the paper. Nonlinear boundary value problem for the base flow is solved numerically. Method of normal modes is used to investigate linear stability of the base flow. Calculations show that cross-flow has a stabilizing effect on the flow while the increase of the intensity of the chemical reaction destabilizes the flow. Marginal stability curves become more complicated for large Prandtl numbers where instability in the form of thermal running waves sets in.
