The improvement of globally deployed wavelengthdivision multiplexing (WDM) network capabilities have received significant attention due to the rapidly growing demand for higher data rates and seamless connection to the Internet today. One of the most promising solutions to improve the spectral and power efficiency of these networks is to substitute laser arrays with optical frequency comb (OFC) generators. This article reviews and compares three perspective OFC technologies for channel carrier generation in telecommunication applications.
