As the various crafts skills both in Latvia and the world fast continue to disappear their historical value increases. In 1995 Latvia joined the UNESCO Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural heritage in order to preserve the intengible heritage and to demonstrate our willingness to do so in the eyes of the world. Our project deals with experiences gained in the past, analysing of questionnaires, acquainting interested parties with material gathered on various expeditions and comparing material gathering methods. This project is dealing with the learning of the craft, its further development and its preservation. The role of the Craftsman is to exercise and pass on his learned and acquired skills to the Apprentice. The third person in this equation is the Researcher whose task it is to look at the whole picture, recognise the problems involved, to systematise them so that the completed product can be utilised for tuition and research. There are several ways one can gain information as regards to craft skills and associated knowledge. The project looks at various methods of fixing skills which permits to establish areas which would be of further interest to the Researcher. The methods used by the Researcher are: direct observation of Craftsman’s work; methods of documentation questionnaires and interviews. The project looks in depth at 5 questionnaires from 1965 to early1990 and analyses their content. The selected questionnares do not have the same aim, research object, the same questions, do not cover the same period, research object etc. Ex.LPSR Academy of Science, The Institute of History, Ethnographical section’s questionnaire (1967) „Weaving with hand-tools“. Questions are aimed at hand-weavers in various districts of Latvia. The questionnare „ Craftsmanship in Latvia“ contains information regarding tools and products. LPSR Academy of Science, The Institute of History, Ethnographical section, sector „E. Melngaiļa Tautas mākslas nama“ questionnaire has been oriented towards Arts and crafts and published as a brochure. Questionnaire‘s „Amatniecība“ (1965) mainly deals with artifacts. At the beginning of 1990’s LAK had designed a set of questions, named „A few tips how to preserve disappearing crafts“ to be used to obtain maximum amount of relevant information in various areas.
