Abstract The authors propose a method for estimation of the untapped regenerative braking energy in urban electric transport networks. The method has been developed applying principles of the probability theory and it uses the electric transport timetable. Being based on the experimentally obtained power consumption data the method makes it possible to estimate the economical aspects of the regenerative braking energy utilization not only for the current situation but also for the future in view of the plans concerning renovation of the transport fleet and changes in the traffic organization.
