Kahoot! as an Assessment Tool

Covid-19 has led to tremendous changes in the educational system; it has shown that some of the classes might and should be delivered remotely. However, there still exist some problems in maintaining the students’ attention for 90 minutes straight in front of the computer screens. It is especially noticeable in the foreign language classroom, where the focus has shifted from the coursebook-bound classes to the student-centred approach. One of the essential competences that foreign language teachers in the 21st century classroom should possess is digital competence and the ability to embrace the possibilities information technology has to offer. The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the potential of the use of the gamebased application Kahoot! as a formative assessment. For the purposes of this paper, there have been classes designed based on the biographical drama The Laundromat. The classes were aimed at terminology facilitation and at different stages of the classes Kahoot! was applied as a formative assessment tool. After all classes were carried out, Kahoot! was also used as a summative assessment tool in combination with an online test conducted in Moodle. To establish the view of the students on the application of Kahoot! in the foreign language classroom, a questionnaire was administered on the online survey platform visidati.lv.
