Biographical section about Latvian physicist Dr.phys. Agris Gailītis (1935-2024). Agris Gailītis was an internationally recognized leader and one of the world's most famous scientists in the field of magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) of liquid metals. The main author and leader of the idea of the Salaspils Dynamo experiment. This experiment, conducted in 1999, was the world's first successful realization of an MHD dynamo in a laboratory. It confirmed the self-excitation effect of the magnetic field predicted by the dynamo theory, which is a generally accepted explanation for the origin of the magnetic fields of the Earth and many other celestial bodies. It is considered one of the most significant achievements of Latvian science of all time.
