Gundega Tomele’s doctoral thesis in educational sciences „Promotion of child’s language development and correction of language disorders in the aspect of Montessori pedagogy” was developed at the Institute of Educational Sciences of Liepaja University under the guidance of Dr. paed. professor Anita Lidaka (2010 – 2017) and Dr. habil. philol. professor Dace Markus (2018 – 2021) from January 2010 to November 2021. The aim of the thesis is to substantiate the possibilities of using Montessori pedagogy in promoting language development and correcting language disorders and to develop a multi-structural model of a child’s language development in terms of a holistic approach, based on the analysis of Montessori pedagogy and speech therapy theory and practice. The volume of the thesis is 188 pages and 12 appendices. In the 1st part of the thesis the author analyzes the child’s language development theory, speech therapy theory and the carried uot practice. Theoretical and practical aspects of speech and language development disorders are summarized, possible solutions for reducing the consequences of children’s language disorders are identified – primary, secondary and tertiary prevention, introduction of new speech therapy technologies in practice. The 2nd part of the thesis deals with the theory and practice of Montessori pedagogy in terms of promoting language development and correcting disorders. A summary of the application of Montessori didactic principles and materials has been made, justification for the implementation of the holistic approach in the promotion of language development and correction of disorders based on the analysis of theory and experience has been provided. The 3rd part of the thesis reflects the essence of the independently developed multistructural model of speech and language development. Survey data of speech therapy specialists and Montessory teachers have been collected and analyzed. A summary of professional experience has been made for inclusion of Montessori pedagogy in the promotion of language development and correction of disorders in the study program “Speech Therapy”. At the end of the research statements are developed to defend the thesis, reflecting the scientific and practical novelty of the thesis.
