The topic of the Doctoral Thesis was chosen to investigate and examine the possibilities of learning German in DSD schools (German language diploma schools or DSD schools; in German, the acronym DSD stands for Deutsches Sprachdiplom), and to improve the language acquisition process in the context of multilingualism. The aim of the research is to theoretically investigate and practically verify how acquisition of German promotes students' attitude and motivation in acquisition foreign languages, identifying pedagogically conditioned factors that promote or hinder the development of multilingualism in education of Latvian. The research: 1) describes the multilingual didactics implemented in European educational institutions, and reveals its most important features in the context of language education in Latvia; 2) theoretically develops a conceptual basis for the gradual approbation of multilingual didactics in Latvian schools, where one of the priorities is the qualitative acquisition of several foreign languages (here: in DSD schools); 3) the basic principles of multilingual didactics have been researched and presented, as well as opportunities have been opened for the inclusion of other modern teaching strategies and techniques in language teaching, which promote students' motivation and creativity in acquisition several languages, and further integration into a multilingual society; 4) the main factors that influence the formation of a multilingual society in Latvia have been summarized; 5) a conceptual basis has been developed for the development of multilingual didactics in language teaching at school, which is characterized by an innovative approach to modern language acquisition based on alternative didactics principles and strategies.
