The Doctoral Thesis of Ingūna Lāce in the field of pedagogical science, sub-field of higher education pedagogy titled “Pedagogical Self-evaluation in the Career Development of a Future Teacher” was developed at the University of Liepāja Institute of Education Sciences under supervision of Dr.paed. associate professor Ilze Miķelsone between 2008 and 2014. The aim of the doctoral dissertation is to develop a scientifically grounded didactical model for career promoting self-evaluation organisation of future teachers. The topicality of research is based on several unresolved contradictions: preparation of future teachers is oriented towards a static goal – a pedagogue’s competence that would correspond to the profession standard and is recognised through tests and lecturers’ assessment, yet purposeful self-management of career requires regular self-evaluation. In their evaluation teachers and students are encouraged to think of the needs of others, whereas a successful career is characterised by a certain sense of satisfaction in all fields of life, including personal life. Contents and organisation of an assessment is orientated towards the needs of youth development, however currently there are students of different ages studying at higher educational institutions, including those with an obtained professional education and diverse professional work experience, which no longer corresponds to the existing assessment approaches based in youth personality development needs. Author of the doctoral dissertation analyses the significance of self-evaluation in individuals’ life and career development and the essence of pedagogical self-evaluation and defines the concept of teacher’s career. Based on scientific literature analysis on teacher competence, career essence, its development and influencing conditions, the doctoral dissertation formulates teacher career criteria and indicators. Empirical research results confirm the proposed hypothesis on the conditions of pedagogical self-evaluation organisation promoting a teacher’s career. Based on the empirical research results, a didactical model for a career-promoting pedagogical self-evaluation organisation for teachers was developed. The research base consists of 410 teachers from schools of general education in Latvia and 215 teacher education programme students.
