Olafs Zvejnieks: The Latvian Labor Market will have to Start Accepting Immigrants Sooner or Later
2023
Dagnija Blumberga

In the article, Olafs Zvejnieks analyzes the attitude of Latvian entrepreneurs towards Russia's war in Ukraine, comparing it to the phenomenon of rain - we sigh and take an umbrella. Although the war significantly affects the Latvian economy (slower growth, higher prices, reduced trade with Russia and Belarus), the discussion at the Bank of Latvia focused on other problems: the future of energy resources, the legal environment and demography. Professor Dagnija Blumberga, Director of RTU VASSI, emphasized the need to use the changing situation to move towards the development of hydrogen technologies, ahead of neighboring countries and becoming leaders in the energy sector of the future. Her opinion contrasted with a more pragmatic approach that supports the construction of a liquefied gas terminal. The article concludes that Latvian entrepreneurs focus on practical, impactable problems, and the discussion crystallized the conclusion - Latvia will have to accept immigrants to compensate for the shortage of labor in the future.
