Variable frequency drives generate output signal by applying sinusoidal pulse with modulation. Higher switching frequency allows to reduce current ripple thus increasing the efficiency of the motor. From the other side it degrades the efficiency of the inverter. Gallium nitride transistors have lower switching losses that silicon transistors thus potentially allowing increase in switching frequency. The paper provides analysis of benefits of implementation of GaN transistor-based inverter for permanent magnet synchronous motor. The results show that inverter with high switching frequency can improve the efficiency of the motor by approximately one percent.
