Smart cities use intelligent transportation systems (ITS) - sensors, data analysis and artificial intelligence (AI) to address congestion, transportation safety and environmental impact. This paper aims to provide an overview of the smart city concept and the role of ITS with a focus on Barcelona as a case study. The goals and key components of ITS are examined alongside specific examples of ITS applications such as electronic pricing, freight logistics management, vehicle safety systems and traffic management strategies. The study presents various smart transport infrastructure initiatives implemented in Barcelona such as Bicing bike-share, smart parking guidance, AI-based bus operations and connected street lighting.
