The article discusses biomimicry – a branch of science that studies mechanisms, structures and processes existing in nature in order to imitate them in the development of sustainable technologies. Examples of how natural solutions inspire innovations in various fields are mentioned: water harvesting systems, light-reflecting nanostructures in the textile industry and cosmetics, aerodynamic improvements in transport, architectural solutions for energy efficiency. The article emphasizes the relevance of biomimicry in Latvia, mentioning the ideas of Riga Technical University researcher Ruta Vanaga about energy-efficient housing solutions inspired by starfish and whales.
