Economic Aspects of Hazardous Waste Management in Latvia

The organization of hazardous waste management system (HWMS) is one of the most important environmental part of the Latvian state investment strategy, significant ecological problem and fundamental component of long-term well-being. In despite of constantly increasing focusing on the hazardous waste management problems, there are a loto of currently faults and deficiencies, which endanger environmental situation and safety of society. Due to weak legal entry in the area of hazardous waste management, the main EU principles of environmental politics, wich promote long-term well-being. Underdeveloped infrastructure, inadequate statistics about hazardous waste ganaration amounts, determination of origin, motion of hazardous waste flows, as well as insufficient societie’s comprehension about problems of hazardous waste processes prevent hazardous waste proper management. The main economical aspekts of hazardous waste management problems are connected with attraction of investments into establishment of HWMS infrastructure’s elements, selection of appropriated hazardous waste recycling technology and maximize of effectiveness of hazardous waste processing. Taking into account Latvia’s membership in the EU, the financial issues of hazardous waste management is possible to solve with halp of structural funds, inter alia attracting the means of Kohezium Fund, which supports ecological and transport projects of EU member states.
