Abstract With the purpose to assess wood mechanical processing waste potentials as a renewable source of bioactive polyphenolic compounds, antioxidant properties of hydrophilic extracts and lignins (alkaline and pyrolysis ones) isolated from bark/wood of sub-boreal forest trees species: Populus tremula, Alnus incana, Fraxinus excelsior and Picea abies has been examined employing three test systems, such as ABTS/ DPPH/superoxide radical scavenging. Biological activity of extracts and lignins was assessed by pytotoxicity tests on Zea mays and Triticum vulgare sprouts. Alder bark hydrophilic extractives showed the highest antioxidant capacity in all three tests and considerable biological activity. The high antioxidant properties of aspen alkaline lignin and pyrolysis lignins from broad-leaved trees wood were detected.
