Latvian Economic Development and Problems in the Context of World Economy
2008
Juris Saulītis

The author of the paper presents a comparison of the economic development in Latvia within the period since regaining independence with the current world economic situation, pointing to the fact that a certain growth of economic development in Latvia was attained due to intensified development of the services sector , whereas the economic growth of the developed economies is based on the manufacturing sector. For securing Latvia`s economic growth in the future the author makes the following suggestions: - it is necessary to evaluate the manpower resources and their suitability to the structure of the national economy in Latvia in the future; politicians should consider labour attraction from the third countries as it might have a positive effect on the dynamics of economic development; - it is necessary to evaluate the main trends of utilization of agricultural lands and forestry, since agriculture and forestry remain being the leading sectors both for the domestic market and export; - the government and politicians have to solve the problem of efficient electric power supply for national economy. The author stresses that the solution of the above problems could lead to further development of national economy in Latvia.
