Rehabilitation of Composite Bridge near Riga
IABSE Congress Report "16th Congress of IABSE Structural Engineering for Meeting Urban Transportation Challenges" 2000

The bridge over the Gauja River is located 13 km from Riga on the highway to the recreation areas of the Riga Bay Beaches and is a part of Trans European Corridor linking Helsinki with Warsaw. The bridge over the Gauja River consists of five simple composite girder spans, with the common length of 223 m. Due to corrosion, insufficient maintenance, fatigue and growing axle-loads of traffic the bridge needs to be re-constructed and strengthened. The condition of major parts of the existing structures was found capable and sufficient for reconstruction with necessary strengthening. The reconstruction will include changes in the structural system by establishment of continuity in the present simple supported girders, increasing the bearing capacity by releasing the moments in the spans convoyed to the supports.
