Cities and metropolitan areas are places where business is done, investments are made and jobs are created. Cities are the motors of economic growth. They play a key role as centers of innovation and the knowledge economy. At the same time, urban areas are the frontline in the battle for social cohesion and environmental sustainability. Development of any urban area must be based on consistency of economic, social and environmental interests. Economic growth, harmonious society and a healthy environment is preferred external preconditions for the individual and city sustainable development. That requires a careful balance between economic prosperity, social justice and a healthy environment. In fact, if pursued simultaneously, these three goals can mutually reinforce each other. Policies favouring the environment can be good for innovation and competitiveness. These in turn boost economic growth, which is vital to fulfilling social goals.
