Innovations in Didactics at Higher Education Institution: Their Role in the Formation and Development of Professional Competence of Education and Sports Specialists

An innovated study process is a purposeful teaching and learning process that creates conditions for the development of students – further specialists’ professional competence. The most essential innovations in didactics applied at the Latvian Academy of Sport Education emphasizing innovative approach towards the improvement of the study courses at the Department of Social Sciences, as well as newest teaching methods, the choice of learning styles and student work organization forms, developing their critical and creative thinking are taken a look at in the article. The results of student questionnaire and tutor work self-assessment, where the students and tutors point out advantages and disadvantages of the innovative study process, as well as recommendations concerning the possibilities to improve the study process are given in the article. The results of investigations allow asserting that innovating study process and promoting the development of student – future education and sport specialist professional competence, should be taken into account all possible subjective and objective factors, influencing the quality of the given qualification: Student needs, the regularities of the development of his or her personality, study motivation, student activity, the forms and relations of student and lecturer mutual cooperation, innovations in study content and methodology, study environment, the technical and informative provision of the study process, etc. Special attention should be paid to student needs and proposals for the improvement of the quality of education. The tasks of the lecturers is using their professional competence, innovations in the didactics of higher education and corresponding pedagogic means create conditions, promoting the quality of education, so that student during studies reaches readiness for professional life activity, preparedness for life and work in changing environment. Each class and study activity should become means for the formation and development of student professional competence, in readiness of his or her skills and the development of her or his characteristics.
