Analysis of Pedagogical Practice in Sports of Students Obtaining the Speciality of Sport and Biology Teacher

Riga Teacher Training and Educational Management Academy prepares teachers of sports and basic education biology. The theoretical knowledge obtained during the classes is used by the students to develop practical experience in pedagogical work during teaching practices. The self- evaluation of teaching practice in sports of 4th and 3rd year students of sports and basic education biology teacher program has been analysed in the present research. The questionnaire of students was circulated. The results of the questionnaire showed that the majority of students consider that they have the average level of proficiency at organizing the educational content, they have a medium level at orientation in new tendencies of sports pedagogy, medium ability to motivate students for lessons and estimate students’ achievements, as well as medium ability to organize cooperation of students in group. The 4th year students in general have a slightly higher self estimation of the above listed proficiencies than 3rd year students. The majority of students consider that they have good proficiency in advancing the aim of lesson and realising time planning during the lesson, and they have good communicative competences. The main difficulties for students during teaching practice are to maintain discipline in class, make a good choice of an appropriate teaching material and teaching methods. Some students lack organizing abilities. The most important suggestions of students for improving the quality of pedagogical practices are: to organize practices every study year, to implement the course “Pedagogical practice in school” before teaching practices, to prolong the period of pedagogical practices, teachers must acquaint students with the school life and the regulation of internal rules in schools more properly. On the whole students critically estimate their skills and knowledge but they assess the role of pedagogical practices in the improvement of their professional competence.
