Professional competence as a complicated and developing concept is described in the article. Four approaches towards competence understanding are revealed. Eight groups of indicators describe professional competence. They are: continuous improvement of knowledge and skills; social competence; functions, duties, responsibility and autonomy at work; development of various abilities; professional values and ethics; professional recognition and expert work; relationship between a companies’ ideology and professionalism; professional creativity. The study mainly comprises the first group of indicators and focuses on the problems of Geodesy course completion. Prospective geodesy and land survey specialists’ development of professional competence in the frame of Geodesy study course is assessed. The questionnaire of LLU and RTU two study programme (Land Survey and Geomatics) students were carried out by an inquiry form prepared by the authors. Totally 63 students were under survey. The results of the study lead to the conclusion that acquisition of Geodesy promotes the development of professional competence for the students of both higher schools to great extent because about 80% answers were positive. The questionnaire revealed also a few problems and shortcomings in acquisition of Geodesy and it is important to consider them in the future.
