Biology at the Riga Polytechnikum and at the Riga Polytechnical Institute (1862–1918)

In October 2 (14) 1862, the Riga Polytechnikum was founded Introductoty courses were offered, where are lecturers and professors from Jurjeva (Terbata) university were invited to teach mathematics and natural sciences. In 1863 the Department of Agriculture was initiated, where M. Gottfriedt and P. Westberg guve lectures in botany, zoology and microscopy. Additionally Jegor fon Sivers tought plant anatomy and physiology. Courses were given by Reinhold Wolff and Franc Schindler. Many agriculturists in Latvia were trained by Fedor Bucholtz (Бухгольц Ф.) and Karl Reinhold Kupffer. In 1894. K.R.Kupffer come to Riga and started working as an assistant in microscopy with F.Schindler. In 1897 F.Bucholtz, who was the founder of mycology in Latvia, lectured in botany, zoology and microscopy. His speciality was underground fungi. K.R.Kupffer’s investigations in botany were on flora, plant systematics and vegetation ecology. Also S. Basarewski thought agrochemistry and botany, as well agricultural subjects and microbiology, M.Stahl–Schrider worked in the Peterhof agriculture agrochemistry laboratory and farm as an assistant (1892–1899), assistant professor and professor (1900–1911). G. Schneider was an associate professor later professor in zoology. W.Bursian worked in the Peterhof agriculture agrochemistry laboratory and farm as an assistant (1899–1912) and assistant professor in agronomy (1903–1918).
