Charasteristic for Latvia products of building ceramics are bricks, drainage tubes, roof tiles, ceramic tiles and ceramsite. After Second Worls War the production of bricks in Zemgale district was concentrated in two factories. In the basin of the river Lielupe in the complex ща еру enterprise of building materials in Kalnciems and at the factory „Spartaks”. They were formed by uniting the former brick manufacturing workshop. In Vidzeme region the work was renewed by Cesu and Tujas brick manufacturing workshops. In Latgales region – by Jekabpils, Rezeknes and Daugavpils-Kalkunu brick manufacturing workshops. There were built new factories in Lode, Livani and Kuprava. During the first two decades the production of drainage tubes in Latvia was underdeveloped. They were produced by two enterprises – by brick factory in Jekabpils and „Spartaks”. The production of drainage tubes was expanded when in 1963 there was built the factory of drainage tubes in Lode. Later there were built new factories of drainage tubes in Kuprava in Latgalia region and in Usma in Kurzeme region. The roof tiles were produced by „Spartaks”, later also by the brick and drainage tube factory in Lode. The assortment of Building ceramics in Latvia was enlarged by ceramsite and glazed ceramic tiles, which were not produced in Latvia formerly. The first factory of ceramsite was open in 1963 in the factory of building materials in Jekabpils. Later it was joined by the factory of drainage tubes in Kuprava and by Nicgale ceramsite workshop at Livani brick factory. Glased tiles of ceramsite for inner and exteriour decoration are being produced since 1975 by cement and slate combined enterprise in Broceni, namely by the workshop in Ciecere.
