A radio transmitting station, located near the power station on the river Aiviekste, broadcast from 1932 – 1944 in the Kalsnava civil parish, in the Madona district. It received the Riga radio program by telephone and the station broadcast it through the corresponding radio wave lengths. The transmitting station supplied all of eastern Latvia with the wave lengths necessary to pick up the Riga radio broadcasting program. At first, the 250 m long aerial of the transmitter was stretched between two 116 m high pine wood towers. They were built by 10 Latvian men using plans made by the radio engineer Remberts Martinsons. At the time these were the highest wooden radio masts in Europe and even aroused the interest of American specialists. One of the wooden masts was bent by a very strong wind. Therefore, at the beginning of the summer 1940 a 33 span metal tower of 230 m height was erected. It was the highest building in Northern Europe and also served as an antenna. It was destroyed during the war.
