The German reform pedagogue Hugo Gaudig (1860–1923) has influenced pedagogy in the Baltic States with his publications and in a special way by his voyage to Latvia in 1922. Many teachers from Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania had visited him in Leipzig before. They took part in his lessons, have listened to his teachings and have read his books. The Association of German– Baltic teachers of Latvia (Deutsch–Baltischer Lehrerverband Lettlands) have invited Hugo Gaudig and his collaborators Lotte Müller and Otto Scheibner to the Pedagogic Autumn Week (Pädagogische Herbstwoche) in Riga in 1922. At this event 1159 pedagogues participated. Most came from Latvia, but in this number 74 were from Estonia, one from Lithuania and four from Germany – H. Gaudig with his collaborators and the director of the Central Institute for Education and Schooling (Zentralinstitut für Erziehung und Unterricht) in Berlin, Walter Schoenichen. Hugo Gaudig based his ideas on the concept of the “work-school” without accepting the wider implications of civic education. In this year we are celebrating his 150 birthday and the book “Hugo Gaudig”which is printed in 2010 will take part in the evaluation of the importance of Hugo Gaudig as a reform pedagogue. The author has found documents in the archives which were unknown and unpublished until now and they are quoted in the publication. The statements of the contemporaries of H. Gaudig and the articles in the in the Latvian press are cited and can be analyzed. It contains also the letter of Gaudig from November 14th 1922, in which he thanked the Baltic-German Teachers Association for his friendly and worm–hearted reception in Riga. H. Gaudigs lecture of November 2nd “The idea of the culture school” (Die Idee der Kulturschule) is published in full. The demonstrative lessons of H. Gaudig and L. Müller which are cited from the transcripts (Stenogramme) that were made, show how both teachers and worked in Riga. They are published in full and can be a source for historians of education. The author also gives an overview of the influence of the pedagogy of H. Gaudig on his followers in Latvia, Estonia and Lithuania.
