The combustible mass consists of such materials as plastics, cardboard, paper, textile, wood etc. These waste materials can be burned as an amorphous mass, i.e. unchanged enter the waste incineration plant (as received), or by pre-processing (as refuse derived fuel). The aim of the study is to determine production and utilization potential of RDF in Latvia in order to understand how big impact can municipal waste incineration with energy recovery have on waste management and energy supply systems of Latvia. The amount of energy, which can be obtained from waste, mainly depends on the fuel composition and quality, including moisture content, ash content and lower heating value, as well as the efficiency of the used incineration equipment. Rough calculations, which have been done before, show that in Latvian energy sector the share of fuel derived from municipal wastes could potentially be 2 to 3.5%.
