Russian University Courses, a private University, were established in Riga 1921 . From 1922 to 1929 this higher education institution comprised a Department of Pedagogy at which teachers for the Russian primary schools in Latvia were educated and trained. In the course of seven years almost 60 teachers got their education there. The future teachers had only one year to acquire all knowledge and skills required for the whole programme of the primary school. They were trained by the experienced pedagogues and among them former students and alumni of Riga Polytechnic and Riga Polytechnic Institute. The rector of the Russian University Coursers, Professor Konstatin Arabajin (K. Арабажин) had intended to extend the study programme of these courses and to prolong the time of studies for two and later even four years but he did not succeed. In 1926 the Ministry of Education of Latvia founded the Russian Courses in Pedagogy and this led to the decline of the Russian University Courses of Arabajin and in 1929 this department was closed. In 1930 the Russian University Courses of Arabajin gained the new name,i.e. the Russian Institute of University Sciences and it existed until 1937.
