This article is dedicated to memory of professor Leonids Osipovs and his group, their educational and scientific work at Latvian State University (1945 - 1958), Riga Polytechnical Institute (1958 - 1990) and at Riga Technical University (from 1990), Faculty of Chemistry (1945 - 1986) and Faculty of Chemical Technology (1986 - 1990), Department of General Chemical Technology (1945 – 1997). The contribution of professor L. Osipovs to founding and development of Department of General Chemical Technology (which was also headed by him from 1955 to 1974) has been covered in this article. With his unceasing work professor L. Osipovs has aided the application of chemical engineering for modernization of chemical industry of Latvia. Moto of professor’s scientific activity – “Science for industry!” – has been the main guideline of his life. Under his lead, personnel of Department has developed and introduced in practice more than 20 industrial equipment units. The innovational quality of this equipment is confirmed by issued certificates of authorship. In this article a short glimpse into the work (educational activity and scientific research) of professor L. Osipovs and Department of General Chemical Technology is given. Department of General Chemical Technology under professor L. Osipovs concentrated on the following research activities: mass transfer processes in chemical engineering (drying, sorbtion, distillation, ultrafiltration, etc.), from 1960 to 1997; research on properties of crude oil (extracted in Latvia) and its distillation products, from 1967 to 1973; environmental protection and environmental problems – prevention of air pollution, decontamination of soil and groundwater, from 1960 to 1997. In this relatively short period of time professor L. Osipovs and his group have written more than 300 scientific publications, textbooks and study guides.
