The Problems of Preparing an International Coursebook in Cartography
2012

The need for an international coursebook in cartography has been felt since the 1970s. The work in three volumes prepared by the experts of the Netherlands and other countries did not solve this problem. This was also due to the fact that this work was mainly envisaged for educating cartographers for the third world countries. Therefore, many countries used and still use their own national coursebooks, which greatly differ in structure. Of course, many things that are found in national publications can be used in preparing an international coursebook. Therefore, first of all, it is necessary to agree on a version that would be acceptable to most of the countries so that this coursebook envisaged for a bachelor study programme in cartography could be used within the framework of study exchange programmes, e.g. ERASMUS. Secondly, it is necessary to agree on creating an international group of authors for preparing this coursebook both in paper and electronic versions. Thirdly, it is necessary to agree on the languages and terminology to be used in the coursebook. Considering the terminology used in the publications mentioned in the article, the terminology in the publication by the Lithuanian authors is most acceptable. An international coursebook should contain a description of the specialized software that is most widely used in cartography. The above-mentioned work by the Lithuanian authors describes only one quite widely used software ArcGis. Undeniably, providing funding for preparing and publishing an international coursebook (in paper and electronic versions) is a very important problem. This problem should be solved by the leaders of ICA, because one of the main tasks of ICA is to support cartographic education. Hopefully, the ICA conference to be held in Paris will also discuss the problem of preparing international coursebooks, because the international mobility of students, as well as academic staff grows.
