Both micro and nano silica reacts with calcium hydroxide to
produce calcium silicate hydrates (C-S-H). Thus the amount of
binder is increased, which both increases the strength and
reduces the permeability by densifying the matrix of the
concrete. As the silica reacts and produces the calcium silicate
hydrates, voids and pores within the concrete are filled as the
hydrates that are formed bridge the gaps between cement
grains and aggregate particles.
