As one of the historical widely used low-temperature binders was romancement – natural cement, produced from marl. It was the main hydraulic binder applied in 19th/20th century. In Latvia, in contrast to other parts of Europe, dolomitic romancement was used. However since the middle of 20th century its production has been stopped. At the same time, there is a great necessity for compatible materials for restoration purposes. Thus the aim of given research was to synthesize a hydraulic binder with chemical and physical properties close to historical dolomitic romancement. Dolomitic romancement synthesis of mixture composed from local Quartenary period clay and dolomite (both in powder state) in mass ratio 24:76 is discussed. The chemical composition of the raw materials was analyzed. Specimens were prepared by weighing the requisite amounts of clay and dolomite, homogenizing the mixture in dry state. Plate samples were shaped under the pressure of 20 MPa (by adding 10 % water), dried and fired in the temperature range of 650-1050ºC in 50ºC steps with the holding time at each peak temperature for 2 hours. Natural dolomitic marl was parallel fired at the same conditions. As a result, hydraulic low-temperature binder was obtained. XRD analysis showed that crystalical composition of the binder obtained from clay and dolomite is the same as for burned natural dolomitic marl. Optimal burning temperature was determined. Chemical and mineralogical compatibility to historic dolomitic roman cement allows consider the new binder to be perspective for restoration needs.
