Bone healing devices composed of materials that slowly dissolve over time offer an attractive alternative to traditional metal implants because they reduce stress shielding and do not require a second surgery to remove the implant. Combining resorbable polymers and calcium phosphates into composite materials offer the possibility of creating osteoconductive implants with enhanced toughness all while tailoring degradation behaviour. In such composite, the alkaline resorption products of calcium phosphate can buffer the acidic degradation products.
