In the Doctoral thesis the influence of treatment and purification of illite containing Latvian clays on their physicochemical properties, which are important for application in cosmetic products, was investigated. Based on obtained results, clay treatment and purification technologies for application in cosmetic products as sorbents, thickeners, UV filters and emulsifiers were developed. In the literature overview, information regarding the period of time from 1954 to 2013 is summarized in areas including characteristics and properties of clays and clay minerals and the inlfluencing factors, application in cosmetics, clay purification and treatment methods, clay deposits in Latvia, their application and research. In the experimental part of the thesis, the used materials and equipment are described, clay fractionation and purification from carbonates and iron compounds is conducted. For clays with fraction under 63 μm mineralogical, chemical and particle size composition is determined, water suspension viscosity and adsorption of squalene and oleic acid is investigated and compared with adsorption properties of commercial cosmetic clay masks. For clay fraction under 2 μm mineral phase composition, colour from Munsell colour system, zeta potential, particle size composition and antibacterial properties are determined, as well as the influence of clay treatment and purification on viscosity and stability of glycerol solution suspensions, UV radiation transmission and stabilization of emulsion oil-in-water. The Doctoral thesis is written in the Latvian language, its volume is 106 pages. The thesis contains 49 figures, 14 tables, 1 annex, and 162 literature sources.
