Improving previously known birch outer bark processing technologies, a novel method was developed and extraction unit was patented for obtaining of the chemical compound - betulin with high yield and purity in a simple and effective extraction process, which could be scaled up to industrial production in Latvia. Hereby it is possible to improve significantly the level of processing efficiency of birch wood as well as total added value obtained from veneer industry, which takes an important part in Latvia’s industry market. Intensive mass exchange extraction unit has been specially adapted for the isolation of betulin with high purity (90.1%) from non-polar hydrocarbon solution, which precipitate during the extraction process in attached intermediate crystalliser. Using several effective intensification extraction and birch bark processing methods an optimal regime was developed. Thereby, from pellet fraction of industrial bark with a particle size from 0.4 to 2.0 mm can be isolated almost the maximum amount of betulin (22.9 wt.% from oven dry outer birch bark). And further, after using simple separation and recrystallisation operations of betulin, analytically pure (>96.6%) betulin and lupeol concentrate was obtained, which can be used for isolation of individual compounds. In the research process a novel birch outer bark quality control method was created, by which it is possible operatively determine the content of admixtures of the inner birch bark by using the heat of combustion. Options of rational applications of betulin and birch bark processing residues, as well as offers of the technological proposal for industrial production of betulin and lupeol were discussed.
