The aim of the paper “Interrelation between supporting learning environment and school dropout” by Mg.soc.sc. I. Dorila is to explore the reasons why youngsters drop out of school and to identify the ways to reduce it. The research is topical due to the changes in the society, which arise due to the rapid development of information technology and as a result of economically political circumstances. The problem is socially topical because it is connected to other issues. If the youngsters drop out of an educational establishment not acquiring a certain level of education, not only the education level of the society lowers but also the level of qualification and the quality of life as well as the risks of unemployment increase. The theoretical basis of the research is formed by the theories of development needs of the youth at certain age and their search for identity, which are based on the theories of periodization of human development by D. Elkonin and E. Erikson and the approach of Ms Steinberga that i mplies u sing t hem i n t he p edagogical p rocess. T he a dopted u nderstanding of the concept of the pedagogical environment as an upbringing tool is based on the theory of upbringing and self-upbringing by A. Spona and I. Camane as a part of the whole. The empirical data from the international research and the research conducted at Riga State Technical School are summarized. The applied methods include the analysis of literature, usage of statistical methods, questionnaires and document analysis. The main reasons for expelling are grades below the necessary level and poor school attendance. A great number of expelled students from Year 1 is explained by the fact that students enter a vocational education establishment with very poor initial knowledge. The conclusion is the following: there is a chance to diminish the number of dropouts observing the needs of teenagers and youngsters in the pedagogical process, taking into account individual needs of teenagers and youngsters and increasing the efficiency of the pedagogical process.
