Wireless LAN and LTE Unified Data Channel Performance Evaluation at Various Types of Equipment and Measurement Methods of a Moving Object

Increasing the movement velocity, the download speed decreases. At the speed of 20 km/h handover between access points (AP) is carried out properly. When creating connection, it becomes unstable at higher speeds. Standard client workstation configuration did not allow measuring the download speed at 90 km/h, however, switching the default Roaming Aggressiveness parameters from Medium to Highest, did make it happen. The measurements taken with various LTE devices gave different performance results. In general, it is related to the transition process, when traffic transmission downs are observed as hollows. Each hardware brings its own damping coefficient. Using different LTE router hardware, it was observed that the switching time between APs is different. It is related to the transition processes, which results in changes of overall connection establishing time. It is assumed that different LTE router devices have different interference resistance and it may affect the performance of measurements. The evaluation of the integrated channel (Wi-Fi - LTE) throughput measurements with IxChariot software resulted in lower results compared to iPerf. This can be explained by the higher protocol layers (L4-L7) additional overhead (performance loss in computers, servers). According to received data, we can conclude that the performance of the Wi-Fi and LTE integrated channel appears to be connected not only to the parameters of traffic movement, but also to parameters of used wireless WAN (mobile broadband backhaul) router.
