Creation and Restoration of the Oldest Elements of the Town-Planning Structure of Priekule
Дворцы, особняки, усадьбы. Музейный формат 2018
Silvija Ozola, Ojārs Spārītis

The layout of Priekule in the south-west of Latvia is determined by the location of the modern Aizputes street near which, over centuries, three centers have formed, creating a polycentric system. At the intersection of the road, near the waterway of the River Virga, the estate was founded. The oldest center was the beginning of the settlement. In the period from the end of the 19th century to World War I, the railway and manufacturing enterprises radically changed the layout of the settlement. At the crossroads near the railway passenger station, a new center and market was created. Priekule received the status of a city and a new visual image, which it lost during World War II. After the restoration of the Republic of Latvia, Priekule lost the production and importance of the transport hub, and city-forming factors that contributed to the development and growth of the city. Economic stagnation and changes in economy influenced the functional role of three centers of the city. On the site of the former manor created an education and sports center. Particular attention was paid to preserving the originality of the old part of the city – the former estate center, where the most important architectural objects of the city – the Swedish Gate and the Lutheran Church – were restored.
