This article describes the participation of the university teachers of the Riga Polytechnic in the creation of articles in the German language “Die Rigasche Hausfrauen-Zeitung” (“Riga Housewives Journal”). This journal which appeared since 1883 treated subjects like women’s labor, child raising, education, home- and school education, healthcare, the treatment of sicknesses, it gave practical advice for kitchen and food. The chief journalist of this newspaper Marie von Redelien and other women from Riga visited in the 1880th the popularized lectures in the Riga Polytechnic. The chemist, Professor at the Riga Polytechnic, Paul Walden wrote in 1903, that one of these professors who held popularized lectures was the later famous chemist Professor Wilhelm Ostwald. He held lectures treating fire, water, air and earth and problems of the “physical chemistry” and music. Unfortunately it is impossible to find one article in this journal which is signed by Wilhelm Ostwald. Many of the articles are made anonymous and so it is impossible to say who the author of these articles is. But it is known, that W. Ostwald cooperated with this journal and that in 1886/1887 he constituted, together with the than Rector of the Riga Polytechnic Professor Karl August Livental a jury to select the best articles in the Riga Housewives Journal. There is no doubt that other university teachers of the Riga Polytechnic participated in the elaboration of the articles this journal and popularized there the results of their sciences. The ladies of these professors and the women of Riga were readers of this journal and thus educated themselves.
