Development of the Terminology of Geomatics in Latvia
2009
Jānis Štrauhmanis

There are many definitions of Geomatics but all of them are united by the standpoint that geomatics is a branch of science and practice based on the obtaining, treatment and use of geospatial information. In Latvia, the discussion on the structure of geomatics and its place in the system of sciences is still continuing, but the first explanatory dictionary of geomatics terms (published in 2009) provides the following definition of geomatics: „A branch of science and practice that deals with the problems of geodesy, cartography, geoinformatics and land management for ensuring territorial development”. The first part of the explanatory dictionary contains 82 acronyms, and the second part includes more than 700 terms from all branches of geomatics. Work on developing the terminology of geomatics is continuing, and the electronic version of the dictionary will contain more terms of geomatics with explanation of their meaning.
