Liepaja University, Department of Mathematic and Computer science teaches forthcoming hard scientists, teachers and people who intend to focus on engineering or scientific field. It is a long-term contribution to the Latvian development because everybody knows that, despite the current crisis situation, we need in further natural sciences teachers in the schools and engineers. The long-term development is unthinkable without the participation of science. In 2007 by Professor J. Rimshans chair was established Institute of Mathematical Science and Information Technology (MZIT). Thinking about the engagement of next generation in mathematics and physics, by Professor J.Rimshans since 2006 in Liepaja University is organized in the School of the New Scientists. Already three years in the autumn and spring for Liepaja city and district pupils was held non-traditional type open-Mathematics Olympiad. This autumn was organized an open Physics Olympiad, team competitions. MZITI attitude at researches is an integrated approach to environmental studies in context of regional development. Some of MZIT Institute research areas are the traffic flow modelling, hydrodynamic, climatic, biological and other environmental modelling, the technological process modelling by use of mathematical methods. MZIT institute focuses on the creation of an integrated approach to sustainable land use and river basin management, environmental quality assessment, on respect for corresponding planning tools, on the education of society and its involvement in decision-making process.
