Latvia possesses unique possibilities of participation in the international transit. Transit should be considered not only as the part of business bringing the contribution to gross national product, but also as the important element of positioning of the country on international scene. In the paper the transit sector in Latvia is analyzed, the main tendencies of its development are shown. On the basis of the spent analysis, new decisions which are used in world practice, for attraction of additional transit goods traffics and their qualitative service are offered. Attraction on the Latvian transport network of the foreign trade cargoes is connected with construction of transport-logistical system on the basis of modernization of an existing transport infrastructure and introduction of logistical approaches of management in system of interaction of all participants of a chain of deliveries, on the basis of access equal in rights to the information about freight transport flows. Transit development will be accompanied by increase of requirements to quality of given services: reduction of transit time, decrease in expenses for transportation, optimization of tariffs, safety of cargoes, information support of goods traffics in a uniform format. Acceleration of delivery of cargoes can be provided by only coordinated interaction of all participants of a chain of deliveries of cargoes: Transport knots, stations, ports, the railway, terminals and custom. It will allow to create the transport-logistical branch including: multimodal transport, modern terminals, expedition of cargoes, formation of effective transport routes of the movement, allowing to carry out the combined moving of cargoes.
