National Armed Forces Republic of Latvia has started improvement program of the Soldier Individual Protection System. As a part of this program more than 500 field uniforms of the National Armed Forces Republic of Latvia were evaluated by researchers from Riga Technical University in cooperation with researchers of the Defense Science Research Center. The research was performed in order to evaluate degradation level of the LATPAT camouflage pattern in visual and near-infrared spectrum, as well as physical degradation level of the textiles using in tailoring of the field uniforms. Samples of the field uniforms were evaluated after Military Operation ISAF Latvian Contingent rotation 6 months in Afghanistan as well as fielding within territory of the Republic of Latvia. Types of degradation differenced by design zones and elements of the field uniforms were evaluated. More than 50% of evaluated uniforms are without any kind of physical degradation of the textiles. The rest amount of the evaluated uniforms has mostly abrasion type of the physical degradation as well as recognizable degradation in LATPAT pattern. Limited amount of the samples were selected for evaluation of the visual and near-infrared reflectance of the LATPAT camouflage pattern. Research shows all four colors presented in LATPAT degradation in visual spectrum and two colors deviation from required in the near-infrared spectrum. Performed research cause several amendments in the “Norm of the Supplying of the National Armed Forces Republic of Latvia with field uniforms” of the MOD Republic of Latvia, as well as provide scientific basis of the direction for the further improvement of the Soldier Individual Protection System and improving technical specification of the procured textiles for the tailoring field uniforms.
