Sustainability as a Core Component of Engineering English Course at Technical University
Conference Proceedings of PERL’s International Conference „Enabling Responsible Living” 2011
Diāna Rumpīte, Elīna Dāce

Sustainability and sustainable development are becoming core components in selecting the study content of an online and offline mode of language learning, including Engineering English at a technical university. It has been illustrated by rethinking the study content of Engineering English at the faculties of Riga Technical University (RTU) (e.g. Civil Engineering, Computer Science and Information Technology, Architecture and Urban Planning, Power and Electrical Engineering, etc.). The restructuring of the course is described in the light of practical implementation of sustainability in the interdisciplinary study of the major “Materials and Resources” and Engineering English at the RTU faculty of Power and Electrical Engineering. The students’ attitudes and values are studied regarding the interpretation of the ‘sustainability’ concept and non-stereotype solutions of problem situations, both orally and in writing.
