Sustainable and Rapidly Renewable Material in Design Objects in Latvia

The aim of this work to describe the situation in leather processing in Latvia and situation in higher design education in Latvia. There is going to be explored the cause of elimination of hide manufacture and higher leather handling education in Latvia. The main problem of Latvia’s leather tannery failure is bad economical situation in Latvia and the problem with slaughterhouses as well, because they are located far away from leather tannery joint – stock company Ritales. Second problem is the lack of professionals which would work and lecture on this area. Analyzing all factors the conclusion was done about the necessary steps: study out term sustainability, referable to leather material; investigate situation in leather processing in Latvia; examine companies which offer leather furniture in Latvia; describe leather material special properties (in furniture); explore leather furniture life cycle (possibility of elimination or recycling including sustainability); organize questionnaire to find out respondent attitude to leather as a material and as a material in furniture design; to find out all reasons of decreasing of leather specialists and find out advantages for further activities.
