Anotācija angļu valodā The aim of the present research is to find out what jargon words the students of Latvian Academy of Sports Education use in the communication with their training mates in different kinds of sports. An inquiry was organized with the participation of 150 first year students. They were asked to explain together with who, where and why they use or do not use the jargon words. The students were asked to tell what jargon words they use in their kinds of sports. To find out which lexical items are popular and have already gained a stable position in the colloquial speech, which ones are understandable only to the certain groups of speakers and which ones have been used in another meaning than up to now the obtained material was compared to the Latvian Slang Dictionary and the dictionary by V.Ernstsone and L.Tidriķe „Iz jauniešu mutes” („From youth’s mouth”). Reconsidering the obtained material we conclude that informal communication lexis used in different kinds of sport includes jargon words, lingos, internationalisms, borrowings from other languages, diminutives, but the purpose of this research is not a more detailed analysis of the material. The comparison of the lexical items used with the items listed in the above mentioned dictionaries showed that: a) most part of the lexis is used in professional environment and we could not come across it in the mentioned sources; b) some units of the lexis are popular and have been used for a long period of time; c) some of the jargon words that can be found also in the mentioned sources have been used in another meaning in our research. It should be noted that one jargon word can have different meanings in different kinds of sports.
