Knowledge can be assessed indirectly by using various means of rep-resentation. Concept map (CM) is a representation technique that emphasizes the structural nature of the knowledge. There have been numerous studies about CM scoring schemes that would reveal the presence or absence of deep knowledge. Most of these scoring schemes employ several criteria including the usage of correct linking phrases that describe relationships between concepts. As linking phrases are expressed using natural language, it is not always easy to reliably score them. It is a problem not only of manual knowledge assessment but also of software supported knowledge assessment. There is an opinion that simpler CM scoring scheme without linking phrase analysis could calculate the score just as accurate as a more elaborate one. This study tests this claim in a context of IKAS- CM based knowledge assessment system that has been developed in Riga Technical University since 2005.
