The article comprises the analysis of the concept of creativity and highlights its importance and specifics in the field of technical translation. The components of translation competence as a precondition of creativity are pointed out, especially stressing the role of strategic thinking in the work of both professional and would-be translators. The ability to perceive the wholiness of the ST, its unique, characteristic features and render them creatively into the TL has been illustrated by examples.
