The antimicrobial effect of silver ions and its compounds is well known. Implant materials with incorporated antimicrobial agents have been studied extensively in last few decades. Such materials can avoid biofilm growth and prevent bacterial colonization that could lead to implant failure. Silver-doped hydroxyapatite (HAp/Ag) is a promising material for prevention of bacterial infections when used as implant material. It has been proved that silver release rate has a large impact on antibacterial efficiency. Therefore in this study we evaluate bioavailability of silver ions from HAp/Ag prepared by modified wet precipitation methods. The bioavailability was evaluated using both water and simulated body fluid (SBF) as artificial body fluids.
